LADIES TRAVEL ESSENTIALS: THE BASICS

Now let’s get into the nitty gritty! Let's start with the travel staples I never leave home without, regardless of the destination. Whether you're jetting off to a tropical paradise or exploring a vibrant city, these basics will ensure you have a seamless experience:

Luggage

Topping the list of must-have travel items for women is a great luggage set. It’s worth investing in a quality set - trust me, this is not an area where you want to skimp! (I’ve had more than one bag break on me while traveling and it’s not fun).

  • This reasonably-priced black luggage set by Amazon Basics is tried and true for any trip when you are going to be checking in your bags because it is durable and spacious.

  • If you have the budget to splurge, this Away Large Flex suitcase is the gold standard when it comes to checked in luggage. It’s lightweight, classy, and has enough room to hold everything you need, not to mention it’s great features like built-in laundry bags. In my opinion, it’s the best luggage on the market, and it stands the test of time.

  • Carry-on bag - Another important female travel essential is an excellent carry-on bag. This is my go-to carry on bag and I love it because it is so high quality and so well-made. Plus the size is perfectly TSA-approved so I can skip all the airport bag sizing drama, and its multi-directional spinner wheels make traveling so much easier.

  • Weekender bag - This is the perfect luggage for sleepovers, weekend getaways, and as an addition to your roll on bag. This specific bag by Lo & Sons is my absolute favorite travel bag because I can take it on its own or use its sleeve that slides right over the handle of my roll-on bag for extra space when I’m flying. It’s the perfect duo for carry-on luggage, and I also love how much this bag can fit and the built-in shoe storage at the bottom (because there’s nothing worse than having your shoes touch your clothes)!

Packing cubes

If you haven’t tried packing cubes yet, it’s time. They are incredible because they can hold so many clothes and compress them down so they take up way less space in your suitcase. They also help you keep all your belongings super organized so you don’t have to dig through your entire suitcase every time you need something.

  • I’ve tried a bunch of brands, and my favorites are these Bagail compression cubes

  • These cubes are also great - they can be hung up for instant access to your stuff, and even have a compartment for dirty clothes.

Travel wallet

  • This affordable travel wallet has dedicated compartments to safeguard your passport, travel documents, money, and cards organized, allowing for a smooth airport experience.

Travel Wallet

Toiletry organization

Having a good toiletry bag is crucial for staying organized and being able to get ready with ease.

  • Clear pouches - I love these see-through, waterproof pouches to store all my lotions and serums, and for making sure nothing spills or makes a mess.

  • Travel bottles - I keep all my liquids in these TSA-approved, travel-sized, spill-proof, bright and cheerful bottles. Just looking at them puts me in a better mood! I keep mine pre-filled so that way I can just grab and go before trips.

  • Q-Tip holder - I also bring these small containers along to store Q-tips, cotton balls, hair ties, and other small items.

  • Toothbrush covers - These are minty fresh!

Tidy travel necessities

  • Laundry bag - Traveling with dirty clothes is the worst. There is no ickier feeling than when your dirty clothes touch other things in your bag! These clear laundry bags and this pink women’s travel laundry bag are the perfect size to store all your laundry while you travel, and they make post-trip laundry super easy!

  • Shoe bag - Equally annoying to traveling with dirty laundry is having your shoes touch the rest of your belongings in your suitcase. This shoe bag holds 3 pairs of shoes, and you can either put it inside your suitcase or use its luggage strap to strap it onto your roll-on suitcase. It will protect both your shoes and your clothes from intermingling, and keep your suitcase clean as well.

  • Wet bag - This is perfect for throwing your wet swimsuit or sweaty clothes in.

Travel towels

A quick dry body and hair travel towel are indispensable travel items for women.

Travel tech

  • Electric adapter - When you’re traveling abroad, an electric adapter is a must. I’ve had a handful of adapters go kaput on me, but this Swiss-made one by Skross is the best adapter I’ve ever used. It has a sleek design and works with every single socket type on the globe.

  • Power Bank - A power bank is one of those must haves that every jet-setting woman needs. They are great for charging your phone, laptop, camera, headphones, and anything else with a USB cable. I swear by my Anker brand one.

  • Also, don’t forget to pack your cables! iPhone cable here and Android cable here.

  • Cable organizer case - I use this to keep track of all my chargers and cords.

  • Laptop sleeve - This sleeve is beautiful, and it protects your laptop during TSA checks and from all the bumping and moving around while traveling.

  • Luggage scale - Perfect for making sure your bags are under the airline limits.

  • Apple AirTag & keychains - Apple AirTags and their accompanying keychains are indispensable travel companions, providing peace of mind by keeping track of your bags if you or the airline loses them. No.more.worrying.

  • Noise machine - Sleeping in new places can be disturbing. This is the ultimate travel essential, offering effective noise masking with six soothing sounds, and it doubles as a Bluetooth speaker and a night light.

  • Camera - My favorite camera of all time is the Canon Rebel, I seriously can’t recommend it highly enough. I have gotten the most breathtaking shots with it, and I have no photography skills whatsoever! And if you’re doing any sort of outdoors or underwater sports where you want to capture the action, GoPro is the gold standard (be sure to get the waterproof housing case if you’re taking it underwater).

Feminine products

You can’t have a list of travel essentials for women without including feminine products. Plan ahead for the time you’ll be traveling. I’m a big fan of reusable options that are kind to our planet when possible.

Safety essentials

These are my battle-tested go-to’s for staying safe on the road:

  • Anytime you are going on a trip, get travel insurance. It’s not expensive and you’ll be super glad you did. I got bitten by a street dog in India and had to get 5 rabies shots, and my Safety Wing insurance reimbursed me for all the expenses. It’s soooo worth it!

  • Portable door lock - This lock provides an additional layer of security and peace of mind by reinforcing personal safety in unfamiliar accommodations.

  • Luggage locks - These combination cable locks are TSA approved and can be used on a variety of items beyond luggage.

  • Safety alarm - This alarm empowers women with a loud siren and flashing strobe light for attention-grabbing self-defense, with easy attachment to purses or keys.

  • First aid kit - This kit is essential for keeping yourself and your loved ones safe from any unforeseen mishaps.

  • Medications - Be sure to pack any important prescription medications, vitamins, and over-the-counter meds that you might need in this handy pill box. I always bring chewable Pepto for travel tummy, and Dramamine for motion sickness.

  • Insect repellent - Depending on where you’re traveling, insect repellent is a safety must have to protect you from malaria, dengue fever, and other mosquito-borne illnesses. I use this bug spray when I need maximum protection, and this one when a natural one will do.

WOMEN’S TRAVEL ESSENTIALS FOR LONG HAUL FLIGHTS

Long flights can either be relaxing journeys where you get some much needed sleep, get caught up on work, and enjoy in-flight entertainment, or they can be long, drawn out torture sessions. What makes all the difference is strategic packing. This list of my must-haves have been compiled from years of travel experience, and they will ensure you have an enjoyable experience during those lengthy hours in transit:

Sleep through anything gear

I am a die hard fan of these 4 items, which I call my “sleep through anything” gear. With these amazing items, crying babies, talkative neighbors, and annoying pilot announcements won’t stop you from having an epic nap:

  • The softest eye mask ever.

  • Inflatable neck pillow for space saving and super easy transport.

  • Noise-cancelling headphones - Seriously the best headphones in the world, and they also come in earbuds.

  • Or if you just want pure silence, these hi-fidelity earplugs are excellent at blocking noise.

  • Phone holder - If you’ve ever tried watching a movie from your phone, you know exactly why this is clutch. No more having to hold your phone up for the whole darn movie.

Hydration gear

It’s easy to forget to hydrate properly while on the road, and airplanes are dry, Sahara Desert like places. But, if you don’t hydrate your body, skin, and lips while traveling, it will catch up with you!

Things to stay so fresh & so clean

Needless to say, when touching surfaces in airports and airplanes, you need to disinfect. And traveling can leave you feeling icky. So these travel items always come in handy:

  • Hand sanitizer - Even though this is a bit bougie, I freakin’ love this sanitizer because it smells SO good and instantly lifts my mood.

  • Wet wipes - These amazing wipes come in a variety of beautiful scents and have aloe. have been life savers more than once.

  • Clinique facial wipes - These come with a great scent and will leave you feeling super fresh.

  • Essential oil - This is one of my biggest travel hacks of all time. I use this to mask bad airplane smells or to give myself some aromatherapy on the road.

  • Perfume atomizers - So you can take your fave scents with you in TSA approved size bottles.

  • Deodorant wipes - For freshening up on the go.

  • Travel tissues - I always keep these on hand for unforeseen circumstances, and somehow they always get used.

Temperature control

Freezing airports, hot plane rides…navigating the unpredictable temperatures while traveling is an art in itself. These essentials will keep you cozy and prepared for the temperature rollercoaster during your travels:

  • Fan - I love this adorable and functional rechargeable pocket fan and this nifty neck fan.

  • Travel blanket - If I’m not hot, I’m freeeeeeezing! This warm blanket paired with my sleep through anything gear is the perfect antidote.

Things to prevent boredom

It’s torturous to be excited to get somewhere and to have to sit through a long flight before the fun begins, but like everything in life, it’s what you make of it. Be sure to download your favorite shows/podcasts/music in advance, pack books (here’s a list of my favorite spiritual books), and bring along any games you like.

  • Kindle - A traveler’s best friend to pass the time.

  • Journal - My journals are some of the most valuable possessions I own. Long flights are a great time to be introspective and get some quality journaling in.

  • Guidebooks - Flights are also a great time to read up on your destination. Lonely Planet are hands down the best guidebooks on the market.

beauty & MAKEUP essentials for travel

When it comes to beauty gear while traveling, I opt for versatile, multi-purpose products. These are my favorite travel items that will help you look polished and fresh with minimal effort on the go:

Makeup storage

  • Makeup bag - For starters, having a great makeup bag so your makeup doesn’t get destroyed while on the road is key. My all time favorite makeup bag is this Cuyana leather set because it’s just so darn beautiful. I also love this 2-sided bag because I can keep my brushes separated so they don’t get bent out of shape.

  • Clear makeup bags - I use these to keep my foundation and liquid primer separated from everything else.

  • Makeup mirror - Lighting conditions on the road are atrocious, so I bring along this rechargeable travel makeup mirror with lighting to ensure precision in my makeup application.

Makeup essentials

When it comes to the makeup I pack for trips, versatility is key. I bring these travel items along with me everywhere I go because they are multi-functional. I can create a natural minimalist look, and then layer them for a bolder nighttime look.

  • Lipstick - This Charlotte Tilbury lipstick is the best lipstick I have ever owned in my life. It glides on smooth, tastes amazing, and goes with everything. My go to color is M.I.KISS - I feel super sexy as soon as I put it on.

  • Eyeliner - This 24/7 glide-on eyeliner pencil is waterproof and doesn’t budge all day. I use it to line my water line and on top of my lids for a bolder look.

  • Mascara - Another one of my can’t live without staples, this Giorgio Armani mascara is waterproof and works wonders. It opens up my eyes, and gives them a refreshed and vibrant look so I look good for all my travel photo-worthy moments.

  • Tinted sunscreen - Combining sun protection with a hint of color, the ILIA tinted sunscreen shields your face from UV rays while offering a touch of coverage.

  • Eyeshadow palette - This Patrick Ta compact eyeshadow palette is perfect for travel. It has a slim and sleek design so it won’t take up much room to pack. The color options allow you to create versatile eye looks for day and night.

  • Crème & powder blush duo - Another winner from Patrick Ta, this blush duo lets you achieve a natural and radiant complexion, perfect for on-the-go touch-ups and enhancing your travel glow.

  • Pencil sharpener - A travel-sized pencil sharpener keeps your makeup tools in top shape, ensuring precise application and well-defined features throughout your journey. This one by NARS is the best I’ve ever had.

  • Artis brush - Another one of my can’t live without makeup essentials is the Artis brush. It gives me flawless makeup application, and I literally use it for foundation, tinted moisturizer, concealer, eye shadow, blush….everything! It’s the only tool you need.

Skin care

Maintaining a radiant complexion on the road requires a curated selection of skincare essentials. These are my tried and true products that have been game-changers for my skin:

  • This rice polish foaming enzyme powder by Tatcha is an incredible travel hack because it is a cleanser in powder form, so you don’t have to worry about it leaking all over your suitcase and you can take it on the plane with you.

  • Cleansing oil - Discovering this cleansing oil by MAC was one of my great life moments. This stuff cleans every ounce of makeup off of your face in one go, including waterproof eye makeup. It’s honestly magical.

  • Face moisturizers - I am convinced that moisturizing your face is the secret to youth, and I am militant about it. People tell me I look like I’m in college (I’m in my 40’s), and I credit that to two secret weapons that I’ve been using for years: Fresh rose and hyaluronic acid deep hydration moisturizer which I use during the day, and Josie Maran 100% argan oil which I use on my face every single night.

  • Face sunscreen - I am absolutely in love with this clear sunscreen stick from Shiseido. It goes on clear to any skin tone, so it doesn’t leave any white residue, and it makes my skin look dewy.

  • Body sunscreen - My fave sunscreen to protect the rest of me.

  • Makeup remover wipes - After long days of travel, being able to come back to your hotel and quickly wipe your face and fall asleep is an incredible feeling, and these Clinque wipes are amazing at getting everything off.

  • Pimple patches - Travel wreaks havoc on my skin, and I always get breakouts. These little patches are miracle workers!

  • Masks - Hydrating face masks help soothe, hydrate and boost radiance in tired skin, and I swear by these eye masks to help me get rid of dark circles and puffiness. These masks are all great value for the money. Paired together, they create a portable spa experience, offering a refreshing escape wherever your adventures take you!

Eye care

Ensure the windows to your soul are bright and radiant with these travel must-haves:

  • Tweezers - My brows always get crazy when traveling, but these tweezers - which are the best on the market - keep them tame.

  • Eyelash curler - Another one of my secret weapons! Even if I’m going makeup-free, a quick eyelash curl makes my eyes look bright and open. I’ve tried multiple brands, and can say unequivocally that Shu Uemura is the gold standard.

Nail care

I don’t know why, but nails are always an issue when I’m traveling. Hang nails, chipping polish, dry cuticles…you name it, I’ve faced it!

Hair care

  • Travel hairdryer - If you have long hair, you know that it can be a hassle and take forever to dry. This is the BEST travel hairdryer on the market. It’s lightweight and powerful, ensuring you’ll look amazing for all your vacation pics and that you won’t freeze to death from sleeping with wet hair.

  • Hair 2-in-1 curling iron & flat iron - I don’t know about you, but my hair gets cray when I travel. This 2-in-1 curling iron and hair straightener is the perfect travel companion because it does it all - curls, waves, straightening - and its five heat settings make it perfect for any hair type and texture.

  • Travel hairbrush - Hairbrushes take up so much space, which is why I love this compact detangling brush.

  • Hair protectant & hair oil - These two miracle workers keep my hair shiny and healthy.

  • Dry shampoo - It’s hard to have time to wash and style your hair all the time when you’re traveling. Enter this savior.

  • Hair ties - Scrunchies are back in a big way and I am in LOVE. But if they aren’t your style, then I also love these hair ties.

  • Hair tools bag - And I carry all of the above in this bag.

female travel essentials: clothing & accessories

After countless journeys, I've refined my packing list for both style and practicality. From versatile wardrobe pieces to functional accessories, these travel essentials list for women are my personal favorites:

Travel clothing

My travel wardrobe staples are items that can easily go from casual to dressy. Here are the clothes I bring with me everywhere for their style, flexibility, comfort, and easy pairing options:

  • Travel shawl - This comes in super handy for women while traveling. It will keep you warm on cold flights, and can also double up as a sarong, shawl, beach blanket, modesty coverup while changing, or a dozen other uses.

  • Fleece jacket - I love everything about a stylish but still warm fuzzy fleece jacket. This one combines style and functionality.

  • Sweatsuit - The vibe I go for on long flights or road trips is what I like to call “pajama sheik.” This sweatsuit pulls off that perfect combo of comfort and style.

  • Wide-leg pants - These wide-leg pants are a must-have for their breezy silhouette. They can be worn down for a casual look, or elevated for a touch of sophistication during your travels.

  • Leggings - I have been taking these leggings with me on every single trip I’ve taken for over a decade. In my opinion, they are better than alo and lulu leggings because they are soooooo comfy. They’re ideal for active adventures, casual strolls, and can be upscaled with a sweater dress or fancy top.

  • Jean jacket - A timeless and versatile piece, a jean jacket effortlessly adds an extra layer of warmth and style to your travel wardrobe, seamlessly complementing different outfits.

  • Compression socks - Essential for long journeys, compression socks enhance circulation, reduce swelling, and provide comfort, ensuring you arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore.

  • Quick dry underwear - I take these ExOfficio quick-dry underwear with me whenever I’m strapped for space or going on longer trips. They’re super comfortable and I can hand wash and dry them in 30 minutes.

  • Swimsuit - Whether you’ll be lounging by the pool or on the beach, or then for use in the hotel spa, a great swimsuit is a travel essential. My favorite bathing suits of all time are from Revolve because they have the most stylish and unique swimsuits around. And for budget swimsuits I always go to Amazon because they have a ton of adorable styles at affordable prices.

Comfortable walking shoes

Traveling demands comfortable walking shoes that seamlessly blend style with support. This is my go-to footwear that I that provide style and comfort from bustling city streets to scenic nature trails:

  • Adidas Superstar - The iconic Adidas Superstar sneakers combine timeless style with all-day comfort, making them perfect for city exploration or casual strolls.

  • Veja sneakers - Veja sneakers not only elevate your travel wardrobe with their sustainable and chic design, but also provide exceptional comfort for walking tours and urban adventures.

  • Reef flip flops - I have been a die hard fan of Reef’s for over 20 years. They are the most comfortable flip flops on the market, and I will wear them until I die.

  • Teva sandals - Designed for outdoor exploration, Teva sandals offer rugged durability, arch support, and versatility for various terrains and activities. I use them equally for city walking and outdoor hiking.

  • Indoor slippers - I don’t like my feet touching strange floors, whether it’s hotel carpet or the floors of a vacation home. So I always bring these slippers along. Bonus that they scrunch down and take up no space in my luggage.

Jewelry

  • Jewelry case - This plush case for jewelry is petite, luxurious, and has enough space so that you can pack options for your trips.

  • Stud earrings - Simple stud earrings effortlessly elevate any outfit from casual to chic, while their minimalistic design ensures versatility and easy pairing for various occasions.

  • Loop earrings - I wear loop earrings every single time I am going out and want to elevate my look. I’ve been wearing them since high school, and they are still hot. Timeless.

  • Necklace - I wear my solitaire necklace with errrrrything (even my pajamas). It instantly makes me feel prettier and sexier, goes with any outfit, and is perfect for day or night. And when I want to be fancy, I wear this layered necklace.

Versatile bags

These carryall bags will be your trusted companions for every journey, effortlessly blending convenience and style:

  • Travel backpack - This backpack is the perfect size. It fits under plane seats, has a lot of zippers, and ample space. I also love the color options and quality of it.

  • Fanny pack - They’re back and the perfect complement for savvy traveling women!

  • Sling bag - If a fanny pack isn’t your jam, this vegan bag is great for keeping your valuables close to your body while exploring.

  • Tote bags - I always take a couple of these convenient bags along for impromptu shopping, beach outings, or carrying essentials during city explorations.

Sun protection

I am a firm believer that sun protection is the KEY TO LIFE. These items will help protect your money maker:

  • Sunglasses - Obviously, sunglasses are a crucial travel essential for women. I am partial to my classic Ray-Bans, but if you’re looking for budget lenses these sunglasses are super stylish and cheap! Depending on where I’m going, I often pack multiple pairs for different vibes, and this sunglasses organizer keeps them all protected from scratches or damage.

  • Hats - This is a great foldable, sturdy hat if you’re going on an adventurous trip, and this hat is the one I use beach or poolside. And, this hat clip is so clutch for traveling with your hat.

Rain protection

I can’t tell you how many times I have been caught in the middle of downpours while traveling. It’s Murphy’s Law. But now I’m older and wiser and always come prepared with these staples:

  • Raincoat - This coat is my go-to because it’s super cute, scrunches up into a tiny ball for easy packing, and it keeps the wet out!

  • Travel umbrella - Super compact and useful.

Garment care

  • Garment bag - If you are traveling with a suit, nice dresses, or anything you want to protect, this bag will help protect it while traveling. I use a few when I’m going to weddings or interviews.

  • Travel steamer - This steamer is excellent and will keep your clothes wrinkle-free. If you are feeling lazy, then this wrinkle-release spray is also a great option.

  • Mini lint rollers - I always keep a few of these in my luggage.

  • Stain remover wipes - To address accidental spills or stains on the go.

  • Sewing kit - For quick repairs to loose buttons or seams.

  • Fabric spray - Clothes can start smelling weird after being in a suitcase, and it’s not always possible to do laundry while on the road. This spray helps revitalize clothes between washes and keeps them smelling fresh.
